Awareness session for journalists at a local media outlet

Artificial intelligence is entering newsrooms, with its promises and its risks. For St-Paul, we ran an awareness session for the whole editorial team, so that every journalist understands how these tools work, how they are used, and above all the dangers they carry.

Where we started

Generative AI is moving faster than the rules meant to contain it. For a media outlet, whose value rests on the reliability of information, the subject is sensitive. The St-Paul newsroom was not looking to bring AI into its production. It wanted its journalists to know what they were dealing with: what these tools do, what they do not do, and the risks they pose to the craft.

What we built

We ran an awareness session for the whole newsroom, focused on understanding rather than on practice:

  • Understanding AI: how these tools work, what they can do, and why their answers can sound convincing while being wrong.
  • Spotting the dangers: inaccurate information, bias, data confidentiality, questions of sources and intellectual property, generated content that is hard to detect.
  • Taking a position: giving each person what they need to form a considered view and adopt the right reflexes around these tools, whether they meet them at work or outside it.

What it changed

  • A shared culture: the whole newsroom has the same level of information about AI.
  • Reflexes of caution: journalists can identify the risks and the warning signs.
  • A team more at ease with a subject that had raised questions and concerns.
  • A solid base for setting its own rules later, if the newsroom chooses to.
